Fairbanks Ski for Women began in 2003 with the help of Sylvia Slotnick. Sylvia noticed that very few women participated in the regular ski club races, and thought it would great to have an event that celebrated and encouraged women to ski. After many hours of brainstorming on how to get women out to ski, Sylvia and other women decided to follow the lead of Anchorage Ski for Women and have a ski event that would be for females only. Instead of asking for an entry fee, the cost to participate is a donation to the event and proceeds are given to the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living. The comments we often hear from participants are “I had to come, this is such a good cause.”
Ski for Women is a non-competitive cross-country ski event for females of all ages. The vision of Ski for Women is to have a thriving and active cross-country ski community. Our mission is to increase the number of females in the Fairbanks cross-country ski community through an annual fundraiser that is supportive and non-competitive. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Interior Alaska Center for Non-Violent Living, offering programs for victims of domestic violent and sexual assault.
